WHO WE ARE
A City United for
Children's Success
Our mission is to connect all members of the Poughkeepsie community who support children in order to create and coordinate a cradle-to-career system of services, supports and opportunities that ensures every child can thrive regardless of race, ethnicity, poverty or circumstance.

By 2033, over 5,000 City of Poughkeepsie young people and their families will be connected annually to transformative cradle-to-career opportunities that place them on pathways to postsecondary completion and socioeconomic mobility.
As we advance community transformation by investing in our people, we will cultivate a critical mass of youth, civic leaders and institutions that are committed to ending intergenerational poverty and ensuring neither race, ethnicity nor circumstance stands in the way of anyone’s capacity to thrive in Poughkeepsie.
Our North Star
Why 5,000 Matters
Youth in Poughkeepsie experience some of the lowest upward mobility rates in the nation.
Currently, there are 8,855 children and young adults under 24 in the city. Reaching 5,000 means that a majority of children and families will be impacted by this work.

Why 5,000 Matters
With 8,885 children and young adults under 24 in the city, our target of 5,000 will impact a critical mass of children and families.
Why Cradle-to-Career
Addressing complex challenges in education, health, and economic mobility requires a comprehensive strategy. Schools play a critical role but cannot solve these issues alone. Children and families need coordinated support at every stage of their journey, from early childhood through career readiness.
PCC’s cradle-to-career approach connects programs, services, and leaders to ensure no stage is overlooked. By aligning efforts across sectors, we address the systemic barriers that too often hold children back—creating a seamless pipeline of opportunity that fosters equity, justice, and long-term success.
Why Socioeconomic Mobility is Our
Ultimate Goal
For decades, the American Dream was the promise that through hard work, anyone could create economic self-sufficiency for their family within a thriving, engaged community. Today, for too many young people growing up in poverty, a future that includes thriving wage employment, housing stability, and food security for themselves and their children is out of reach.

The Poughkeepsie Children's Cabinet believes that with intention and collective action, we can create new pathways to sustainable employment, community wealth creation, and life long engaged citizenship.

Poughkeepsie is supporting youth on their path to socioeconomic mobility by tracking seven predictive benchmarks, with the belief that as outcomes improve from kindergarten readiness through meaningful employment, youth will be prepared to enter adulthood with stability and opportunity.
